For six years, our region witnessed in wonder as the gap between Prince Edward Island and New Brunswick Canada was slowly bridged. Finally on June 1, 1997 the Confederation Bridge opened. What an amazing work! It cost millions of dollars, family sacrifices and even the lives of three men.
Such a tiny island hidden on the coast of Eastern Canada attracted the attention of much of the world that day. And for what? A bridge!
May this bridge serve to remind you of something actually impossible, that of building a bridge to heaven. Just as PEI is naturally separated from the mainland, so the Bible states that our sins have separated us from God. This may not seem so serious to those for whom separation from God is a natural and normal state. If you are such a one, you need to know that the sins which separate you from God while you live, will separate you from Him eternally should you die without them forgiven.
Sin is not something God passes over, for He is holy. God has said He will judge all people for their sin, and He keeps His word. People try to bridge this gulf between God and man, caused by sin, hoping that good works and religious activities will be acceptable payment for their sins.
What then can you do about getting your sins forgiven? In a word; nothing. This is because what needed to be done has already been done. God has already received the only payment for your sins that He will accept. The Lord Jesus Christ willingly died on Calvary’s cross taking your place and rising again from the dead. God now offers you the free gift of eternal life if you will turn from your sins and place your trust in the Lord Jesus Christ as your Savior.
Although free to us, it has cost the sovereign God of the universe His very Son to build this bridge from Heaven to you. If you choose to reject his gift of salvation, God will keep His word to you. You will be judged as a guilty sinner and receive the penalty for your sins: eternity in that place the Bible calls the Lake of Fire.
As you consider the Confederation Bridge, remember what God has done for you and receive His gift of eternal life.
God so loved the world that He gave his only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have everlasting life. John 3:16
To all who receive Him, to those who believe in His name, He gave the right to become the children of God. John 1:12
